Did Alaska make the right choice?
To be fair with coach Alex Compton, he is a good head coach. He brought Alaska many times in the PBA Finals while the lineup of Alaska has only a "Playoff Contender" roster.
For instance, look at Leo Austria, he leads his team in numerous championship but it does not enforce so much impact on his resume - it is because of the old joke, "San Miguel can win a championship even if they hire a gorilla at the zoo as their head coach"
San Miguel would have won more championships if they have Alex Compton as their head coach. If you look at that on a positive note, Alex Compton has more "achievements" than coach Leo.
Alaska made it clear that Compton resigned - sounds better than getting fired right? But it was a forced resignation.
Did Alaska make the right move?
It is a Yes and a No - because they could have at least asked Alex Compton to be an assistant head coach and Alex would be more than happy and humble enough to accept that. Alex is a better leader than Jeff Cariaso so without a "wingman" assistant coach, Jeff could struggle and since Eric Altamirano also left the group - Alaska will even face more adversaries.
Make no mistake, Jeffrey Cariaso has the experience to do the job as the head coach but look at what happened to Ginebra in the year 2014 when he took over.
Alaska must have seen something from Jeff to choose him over Eric Altamirano that we do not see in the bigger picture. Maybe Jeff improved already or Alaska is simply rewarding him as the most "loyal" from the coaching staff.
More than anything else, Alaska's main weakest point is the roster.
The roster is a complete "mediocre" lineup except for the few - no offense. That's what they need to improve if they want a better chance of winning a title again.
Alex Compton gave Alaska the best chances of winning using an average lineup vs the giants and only time can tell if they made the right choice.
